Eroding Britannia
This series started in 2021, when the British sense of identity had been seriously shaken . The pro-Brexit vote of 2016 surprised many who had always considered themselves to be European; the 2020 Covid pandemic revealed that so-called ‘British exceptionalism’ did not actually exist and the death of Queen Elizabeth II – the nation’s touchstone and a source of stability for over 70 years – signalled the end of an era. Subsequently, we saw unprecedented levels of instability in the government with at one stage four different Chancellors in four months and in Liz Truss the shortest-serving Prime Minister ever, lasting just 44 days in office. All this upheaval lent to a real sense of unease and disorientation in the country.
Eroding Britannia uses coastal erosion as a metaphor for our unstable nation.
Cyanotypes soaked in sea water.
